GrapheneOS spoke about its secret advantage over competitors.
GrapheneOS quickly catches up with the latest version of Android: the project team has prepared to move the secure firmware on Android 17 almost immediately after the release of the new platform. The developers reported that the port is already ready, and the source code is gradually transferred to a public repository.
This pace was made possible by partnership with one of the manufacturers of devices. The GrapheneOS team gained early access to the Android code and the fixes even before they were published in the public domain. Thanks to this, the developers were able to adapt their own changes in advance and prepare the builds without a long delay after the release of Android 17.
First, the project plans to release the final version of GrapheneOS based on Android 16 QPR2. After that, the initial build based on Android 17 should appear. The support will continue for all devices for which the GrapheneOS versions have already been released on the Android 16 branch, but so far the developers have checked only at the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, Pixel 10a, Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
GrapheneOS creates a secure free firmware based on an open Android project. The main emphasis is on isolating applications, strictly controlling access and complicating the operation of malicious code that tries to use errors in the system.
The firmware uses their own memory protection mechanisms, enhanced system libraries; the address space of processes is more strictly divided. The Linux kernel includes additional protection tools, including canary labels in the slub memory distributor, which help to detect buffer overflow attempts.
To isolate applications, GrapheneOS uses SELinux and seccomp-bpf. The user can also point offline programs access to the network, sensors, contacts, USB devices, camera and other peripherals. Thanks to such measures, firmware remains one of the most notable projects among alternative versions of Android with an increased level of security.
