Scientists have found a way to make recycling old smartphones economically profitable.

In the United States, e-waste may cease to be just a growing environmental problem and turn into a source of strategic raw materials. Researchers at the University of Houston have developed a supply chain model that makes recycling old electronics cost-effective. We are talking about the return to circulation of gold, lithium, cobalt and other critically important materials.

Electronic waste is now considered the fastest growing type of solid waste in the world. Old smartphones, tablets, batteries, and boards often lie in boxes for years or are sent to landfills, where they become a source of toxic leaks and fire hazards due to degraded batteries. At the same time, the United States continues to import a significant portion of the necessary rare earth and battery materials, although they are literally at hand.

Lithium and cobalt are critically important for electric vehicles, modern electronics, military systems, and renewable energy technologies. Against the background of growing global demand and geopolitical tensions, the issue of stable supplies is becoming a matter of national security.

The main problem so far has not been the processing technology, but the economics of the process. The electronic waste management system is fragmented: manufacturers, collectors, processors, and material recovery companies operate separately and pursue different financial interests. Coordination between them is expensive and slows down scaling.

The team led by Professor Jian Shi proposed a cost-benefit sharing model. It involves a shift from competition to partnership between market participants, which makes recycling a sustainable business rather than a subsidized initiative. According to the researchers, it was coordination that was the bottleneck, not technological limitations.

The integrated system will keep critical materials inside the American supply chain and reduce dependence on imports. In fact, we are talking about "urban mining" - the extraction of valuable metals from urban waste without opening new mines and environmental destruction.

The authors emphasize that scaling up recycling can simultaneously solve the environmental problem and strengthen the country's economic and defense sustainability. The results of the work are published in the journal Scientific Reports.
