The study of a complex topic now begins with a normal short dialogue.

Working with sources in AI services is gradually shifting from manual collection of materials to dialogue, and Google has updated NotebookLM so that the knowledge base can grow directly from the correspondence with the tool.

The main change concerns the start of work with the project. Previously, NotebookLM required the user to download the sources himself, and then the service already extracted conclusions from them. Now you can start discussing the project in the chat, after which NotebookLM will offer materials for the knowledge base using research functions and Google Search.

According to Google, the new mechanism can help find primary sources in other languages or pick up the works of authors related to the theme of the project. This approach makes NotebookLM not only a tool for analyzing already collected documents, but also as an assistant when searching for sources.

The update also makes the Gemini 3.5 default model for NotebookLM. In addition, Google has added software modules based on Antigravinity, which should help with research tasks and prepare different types of results.

Users can now set NotebookLM detailed instructions for creating materials in the right format, and then edit the finished result. The service supports the export of visualizations and graphics to PNG and SVG, documents to PDF, DOCX, Markdown and text files, images created using Nano Banana, structured data in the CSV and JSON, as well as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint files.

Another change is related to the verification of the answers. Last year, Google added Deep Research to a structured online search, and now NotebookLM will show detailed steps in the chat that led the tool to withdraw. The user will be able to check the course of work and understand where the result came from.

The new features are already available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business clients with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google plans to later open updates to other users, but the company did not specify the timing of the access expansion.
