One technical solution to Apple can destroy the main meaning of the function of Hide My Email.

Apple plans to significantly weaken one of the most convenient features of privacy for users of the paid version of iCloud. The company will transfer hidden email addresses to a separate domain, and sites will be able to understand much easier that a person does not want to disclose their real address.

The Hide My Email feature allows you to create random mail addresses that forward emails to the real user box. Now some of these addresses look like an ordinary Apple mail with a @icloud.com domain, so it is difficult for services to distinguish them from the standard addresses of owners of Apple devices. Thanks to this, users can register on sites and in applications without disclosing the main mailbox.

In a statement to developers, Apple said that later this summer will combine domains for Sign in with Apple and Hide My email. New addresses will be created on the domain @private.icloud.com. Previously, the addresses of Sign in with Apple were released on privaterelay.appleid.com, and Hide My Email addresses could be used by icloud.com.

From a technical point of view, Apple simplifies the circuit and makes one common domain for hidden mail. But for users of this step there is an unpleasant side: sites and applications will be able to immediately see that in front of them a private address. Such addresses are easier to add to filters, limit when registering or completely blocking.

The already created addresses will continue to work, the letters will be sent without interruption. Apple also asked developers and email services to update systems that check addresses, lists of permitted domains, and the rules that messages are filtered so that Hide My Email emails are not lost when they switch to a new domain.

Some Apple users on Reddit criticized the decision. In their opinion, a single domain makes the function less useful because hidden mail ceases to look like a regular Apple address. TechCrunch asked the company for comment, but Apple did not explain why it took such a step.
