The scandal in Oslo threatens to change the rules of awarding awards forever.

In Oslo, a discussion broke out around the procedure for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 after the name of the future laureate became known before the official announcement. The situation has attracted attention due to suspicious activity on the betting market and subsequent verification by the Norwegian authorities.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has reported that premature disclosure of the winner's name is highly likely due to digital espionage. We are talking about unauthorized access to data that should have remained private until the ceremony. The committee's permanent secretary, Christian Berg Harpviken, said that the exact method of the leak and its organizers have not yet been established, but the main version remains interference through digital infrastructure.

The check was carried out with the participation of one of the three intelligence agencies of Norway. Various options were considered, from an internal violation to an external operation by a criminal group or a state structure. There are no concrete conclusions about the perpetrators yet.

The reason for the investigation was a sharp increase in bets on the victory of Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado a few hours before the official announcement of the winner. At first, one large bet appeared, then the volume of investments grew rapidly and reached about $ 2.2 million. Before that, her name had not appeared in analysts' forecasts and media publications.

The committee noted that it was unclear whether the goal was related to making a profit or an attempt to undermine confidence in the award. The organization is now strengthening security measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Maria Corina Machado received an award for her work against the dictatorship in Venezuela. In her statement on the occasion of the award, she also mentioned US President Donald Trump, who had previously publicly spoken about his own claim to this award.
